Creating a home made Dark Den

It's important to provide a quiet place a child can go to when they are feeling anxious or on the edge of an outburst. You don't need to buy an expensive "Dark Den" or have a "Sensory Room" set up in your house / classroom.

Take a thick sheet or blanket, drape it over a piece of furniture such as a table or a sofa and put some cushions or pillows in there along with some favourite toys.

This provides a safe, calm place allowing the child to have time to themselves and reduces the extra stimuli that can cause a sensory overload.
